Expectations By Age A child has emotional, intellectual, physical and moral characteristics. This section divides general and specific characteristics of children into three categories (physical, social and verbal), and lists them by age. A child may vary from the general characteristics depending upon his or her specific developmental progress. How to Individualize Each student has a "bent" with various talents, intellectual capacities and physical abilities. Parents should seek to direct each child towards maximizing strengths and compensating for weaknesses. These characteristics will not be true of each child in every respect. In some areas your child will appear to lag behind at times, while in other areas your child may appear to rush ahead. There may even be times when sudden developmental leaps occur. Use this as a help for selecting activities and content rather than a means of making comparisons. Review and Identify Review the characteristics of the age group you are teaching to identify that age group's developmental stage and to make effective choices as you are preparing lessons. Note the characteristics of the ages before and after your age group for additional help. Expectations by age may be found here. |
