Presenting the Story: Choosing a Style

What style of storytelling best fits you? If you do not know, experiment with the ones described or develop your own. It's a good idea to vary the style from time to time for the sake of interest or content. Whatever style you choose, tell it in an orderly manner, painting word pictures of the truths as you go, and enjoy it.

For a small group of toddlers you may even be able to gather them around and read a story to them. However, be careful to use beginning and ending statements that draw the children toward the story and bring it to a clear conclusion.

Preparation

Pray that God will guide clearly and children will listen with open hearts.

Write out short beginning and ending statements and memorize them to begin the story and bring it to a conclusion effectively while considering attention levels.

Learn the body of the story well enough to maintain good eye contact with children while you are telling it, which means it must be in your heart and mind. Be sure to read the actual Bible passage along with using these methods. Both you and the children will be blessed by your extra effort.

Sample preparation methods:

  1. Read the story onto a tape and listen to it until you are comfortable with it.

  2. Write out the story using your own words.

  3. Read the story and develop an outline of important points.

Reread the passage after you have finished your preparation to check for accuracy concerning spiritual truths.
