Small Preschool Group: Beginning Purpose Beginning activities should get the child's attention and help him or her adjust to separation from parents. It should require limited teacher direction and turn the child's attention towards the focus of the day.
Examples Play dough, puzzles, books and color pages are good beginning activities. Keep choices varied or rotated from week to week to prevent boredom. Introduce the Activity Welcome children warmly with a statement that turns their imaginations toward the focus of the day. See individual lessons for specific suggestions. Transition Purpose Transitions are a positive move from one activity to another, but should not detract from those activities. They are only transitions, not a main event. Examples A rhyme, a song, a bell, a way to line up, or a simple direction such as, "all those with red shoes stand up . . ." How to Select Use one or two for the morning; keep them simple. One particular transition may work for several weeks or months, or even all year. Keep using it as long as it is reinforces the focus each week and the children are enjoying it cooperatively.
